How to play Big 6 Dominoes

Big 6 is played with a double-six set of 28 dominoes (“bones”). The classic game is four players in two partnerships, sitting across from each other, and every player gets seven bones — so all 28 are dealt. With two or three players, the leftover bones become the boneyard.

The player holding the big six (the 6|6) leads it to start the first hand; after that, whoever won the last hand leads any bone. Play goes around the table, and each player adds a bone to an open end of the line so that the touching halves match. A double is laid crosswise. A double that starts the hand is the spinner: once both of its long sides are covered, bones can be played off its other two sides too.

If you can’t match an open end, you draw from the boneyard (when there is one) or pass — “knock.” The hand ends when someone plays their last bone and calls domino, or when nobody can play and the game is locked.

Counting by fives

• After every play, add up the pips on all the open ends. A double on an end counts both halves, and the spinner counts while one of its long sides is still open.
• If the total is a multiple of five — 5, 10, 15, 20 and so on — your side scores that many points on the spot. Leading the 5|5 is worth 10 right away.
• When someone dominoes, their side also scores the pips left in the other side’s hands, rounded to the nearest 5.
• In a locked game, the side with the fewest pips left wins and collects the other side’s pips.
• The first side to reach the target — 150 or 250 is common — wins.
