How to play Hearts

Hearts is played by four players, each on their own. All 52 cards are dealt, 13 each. Before play, everyone passes three cards — to the left on the first hand, then right, then across, and on the fourth hand nobody passes.

The player holding the 2♣ leads it to start the first trick. You must follow suit if you can; if you can’t, you may throw any card. The highest card of the suit led wins the trick. Hearts can’t be led until a heart has been played on another suit (“hearts are broken”).

Scoring

• Each heart you take is 1 point, and the Queen of Spades is 13. Points are bad.
• Take every heart and the Queen of Spades and you shoot the moon: everyone else takes 26 points instead.
• When someone reaches 100 points, the player with the lowest score wins.

• Hearts must be broken — No leading hearts until a heart (or the Q♠) has been played.
• Q♠ breaks hearts
• Points on the first trick — When off, no hearts or Q♠ may be played on the opening trick.
